Ravichandran Ashwin has always been strict about run-outs at the non-striker end. The veteran Indian sparked a debate when he dismissed Joe Root for leaving the crease early during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. A similar situation unfolded recently during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match between Dindigul Dragons and Nellai Royal Kings where Ashwin was on the receiving end.
In the 15th over of the first innings, Ashwin was at the non-stiker’s end and seemed to have left the crease before left-arm spinner Mohan Prasath could bowl his delivery. The bowler immediately stopped and warned the Dindigul Dragons captain of a potential run-out.
Ashwin ultimately managed to survive. Though Prasath didn’t dislodge the bails, the replay showed that the Indian all-rounder had his bat inside the white line.

Before the incident involving Jos Buttler, Ravichandran Ashwin once dismissed Lahiru Thirimanne for the same offence during an ODI match against Sri Lanka in 2012. The then-India captain Virender Sehwag, however, later withdrew the appeal for the run-out.
In 2022, the MCC changed the law of such a dismissal, moving the act from Law 41 (Unfair Play) to Law 38 (Run Out). Thanks to the rule, batters at the non-striker’s end now need to be more mindful about leaving the crease.
Speaking about the TNPL match, Ravichandran Ashwin went on to score 15 off 13 balls as his team Dindigul Dragons posted 136 runs in 20 overs. Opener Shivam Singh was the top scorer for the side. He played a quickfire knock of 70 runs comprising four boundaries and five sixes.
Nellai Royal Kings had struggled a bit during the chase but ultimately reached the target in 17.5 overs. Captain G Ajitesh remained unbeaten at 43 runs while opening batter Arun Karthik added 45 runs to the scoresheet. Among others, R Sonu Yadav and NR Haris chipped in with cameos of 15 and 22 runs respectively. From Dindigul Dragons, Ravichandran Ashwin and Varun Chakravarthy picked two wickets each.
