Pakistan suffered a shocking defeat in Multan as England thrashed them by an innings and 47 runs on Friday to go 1-0 up in the 3-match Test series. The win is England’s fourth consecutive Test triumph on Pakistan soil, after a 3-0 whitewash two years ago. England had only won two away Tests against Pakistan in the previous 61 years. The astonishing win for England also made Pakistan, who were dismissed for 220 in the second innings, the first team in Test history to lose by an innings after scoring 500 runs in their first innings.

Root and Brook’s mammoth partnership of 454 is the highest for England in Test cricket, beating the 411-run stand between Peter May and Colin Cowdrey against West Indies in 1957, and has also taken the record for the highest partnership in Tests against Pakistan.

In terms of the World Test Championship standings, England are placed fourth place with a points percentage of 45.59, while Pakistan are at the bottom of the table with a points percentage of 16.67.

Meanwhile, a video has surfaced on social media showcasing Pakistan speedster Shaheen Afridi allegedly taking a swipe at his teammate. It’s still unclear whom the pacer was talking to but the netizens believed he was addressing Babar Azam as ‘Zimbu’.

Babar Azam has often been mocked and derided by fans who ridicule the Pakistan batter by uttering the word “Zimbu” or “Zimbabar”. This term refers to Babar scoring big runs against comparatively smaller teams.

Babar has been out of form in recent times. His rough patch, particularly in Tests, has been a major point of concern for the Pakistan cricket team. The last time Babar Azam played an innings of 50-plus in a Test was back in December 2022. On that occasion, he had gone on to breach the three-digit mark as well. Babar had scored 161 in the first innings of the opening Test against New Zealand in Karachi.

Babar Azam’s poor Test form continued in the opening fixture against England. The 29-year-old scored 30 runs in the first innings. The situation did not change much in the second innings as he returned to the dressing room scoring five runs after being dismissed by Gus Atkinson.
