'Want Senior Players to Deliver When it Matters': Sanjay Manjrekar Expects Rohit-Kohli to Deliver in Big Games
The form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20 World Cup 2024 has been a concern, but Sanjay Manjrekar wants them to deliver in the big games.

Following India’s qualification to the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2024, the spotlight has been on India’s experienced opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the pair have had a lacklustre start to their campaign in the group stages. But Sanjay Manjrekar is willing to let that slide if the two can deliver when it matters most.

Kohli has only scored single-digit scores in the campaign while Rohit scored a fifty against Ireland but failed to do well with the bat in their remaining games in the group.

“Ideally, if you have gone for people like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, then you have gone for experience. You want to take your experienced players in the World Cup to deliver when it matters,” Manjrekar told PTI in an exclusive interview.

The former India player added, “So, I don’t mind if certain players are out of form. Coming into the knockouts, if they play a defining innings in a semi-final or the final to win the title, that’s the kind of expectation you must have from your senior players.

India managed to go unbeaten in the group stage, going past the likes of Ireland, Pakistan and the United States of America and their final game against Canada was washed out. The Men in Blue will begin their Super 8 campaign with the fixture against Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 20, 2024.

The Indian team will hope their senior duo can get back in form and hope that the conditions in the Caribbean will be more helpful for the batters as compared to the ones in New York.
