As many as 1000 private Madrasas will be asked to close down, Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday. Talking to reporters on the first day of 2024 at his official residence, Sarma made this statement. Recently 1281 Madrasas in Assam had been renamed as Middle English School. After this, the recent statement of Assam CM comes as a shock to many.
Explaining to the reporters, the Chief Minister said, “Private Madrasas are protected by the Constitution of India. According to this, we cannot touch minority-run institutes, because, they are exempted from RTE and all. But keeping in mind all these Assam police and Education Department are working together and probably they will able to reduce 1000 private Madrasas, in next days to come. We will make it two thousand from three thousand in numbers. We are in negotiation with the Madrasas.”
“We have said to them — look you are not providing basic infrastructures; you should not run it. Like that we are working on it,” Sarma added.
In another statement, he said that the Assam government will conduct a special census of indigenous Muslims of Assam. He said that by 2024 census of indigenous Muslims or Assamese Muslims to be completed. Talking about this he said, “We have already approved the census among the Muslims five distinct community which are known as Assamese Muslim Community. It is now in the process of identifying villages where Assamese Muslims are living. Also, they are earmarking the wards and other places where Assamese Muslims are living in the town areas. The census will be completed by 2024.”
It is to be mentioned that in March 2023 Assam CM in a rally at Karnataks’s Belagavi said, “I have closed 600 Madrasas and I am determined to close all Madrasas because we do need Madrasas. Instead, we need schools, colleges and universities.”
