Maulik Patel from Ghatkopar, Mumbai achieved success by cracking the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024 by scoring 715 out of 720 marks. He also scored 94. 67 per cent marks in his Maharashtra State Board exams and is now setting an example that sheer will and hard work are the stepping stones to success.
A student of Allen Career Institute, Maulik Patel was in Class 11 when he experienced pain while urinating. Sonography revealed he had a tumour and after a biopsy, it turned out to be cancer. He was diagnosed with sarcoma, a type of cancer. His treatment began quickly and after enduring 23 chemotherapy sessions and 31 radiation treatments and overcame significant health challenges only to excel academically. He underwent a major surgery in June 2022.
Despite knowing about having cancer, he did not anticipate the surgery. Meanwhile, his doctors feared that his urinary bladder would have to be removed. Luckily, his bladder remained intact and he had to take chemotherapy daily for three to four hours.
Despite the side effects of chemotherapy like constipation, and hair thinning, he did not give up hope. Upon thorough testing, it was found that the tumour was still there and he was given an aggressive treatment. He continued his preparation for his boards and the NEET UG exam. Once again after tests, it was found that his tumour had grown in size. He underwent a surgery in January 2023. Because of this, he had to miss his Class 12 practicals, the board exams and NEET as well.
He lives by the mantra, “Whatever happens in life, I will not give up.” He further believes that it is important to have courage. Only if one thinks about winning, one will win. His treatment ended in April 2024 and he was positive about moving forward. After defeating cancer, he is ready to face other challenges that life will throw at him.
The young student aspires to become an oncologist and dreams of bringing happiness to the lives of cancer patients. He prepared by giving as many mock tests as he could and is hell-bent on getting his MBBS degree from KVM Hospital, Mumbai. He used to study online after he underwent two surgeries and multiple chemo and radiation sessions. Somehow, he managed to study regularly.
Director of Allen Career Institute, Dr Brijesh Maheshwari was in awe of Maulik and said, “We salute Maulik’s courage.” He also appreciated the bravery of his family and shared that every work is possible if one has courage. Maulik Patel has set an example for students across the country.
