Tami Nadu Rains: Schools, Colleges Across Several Districts to Remain Closed Today
The decision of announcing the holiday was reached by the district collectors after considering the effects of the significant rainfall on their regions

In light of heavy rainfall in multiple regions of Tamil Nadu, schools and colleges in numerous districts have announced a holiday for today, January 8. The constant rain in the state caused several of the district’s educational institutions to close today. Nagapattinam, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi are among the districts impacted.

Schools and colleges in the districts of Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam (Kilvelur taluk) have declared a single-day holiday today, according to DT Next. Overnight rains in Nagapattinam, in this case, prompted the closure of schools and colleges. A holiday has also been declared by the schools in the districts of Puducherry, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Chengalpattu, and Karaikal.

The decision was reached by the district collectors in the aforementioned districts after considering the effects of the significant rainfall on the region in question. Despite a severe rain warning in Chennai and adjoining regions today, no school or college holiday has been announced for today.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government rescinded an order extending the winter vacation in Delhi schools to January 10, barely hours after it was “incorrectly” issued by the Delhi Department of Education. Following that, Delhi Education Minister Atishi ordered a five-day extension of the winter holiday for students in Nursery to Class 5 until January 12.

Winter vacation for students was due to end on January 6, with classes beginning  today. However, Delhi has been hit hard by cold waves, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert due to dense fog, moderate rainfall, and a drop in mercury over the course of the next few days.

All schools in Noida and Greater Noida were also directed by the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration to close for students up to class 8 until January 14 owing to the thick fog and cold weather conditions.

Similarly, in response to the region’s extremely cold weather, the Punjab government additionally declared the closing of all schools up to Class 10 till January 14. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann pointed out in an official statement that the action was required for the greater good of children in school.
