Saint Michael, situated in the Digha area of Patna, Bihar, is one of Bihar’s oldest and most reputed schools, with a history spanning 166 years. Surprisingly, many are unaware that this school had its humble beginnings as an orphanage back in 1858.
The school was established in 1858 by Bishop Hartman and began as an orphanage after the 1857 independence movement. It later evolved into a residential school and taught many orphaned children. The campus of the school was adorned with lush greenery. Generally, the classes have about 50 to 60 students on average. Even though it follows the CBSE curriculum, the school is still regarded as one of the top institutions in Patna.
For those who are unaware, JP Nadda, the current working president of the BJP and former Union Health Minister, is an alumnus of this school. Other notable alumni include former Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Sushil Modi, cricketer Saba Karim and IAS officers Chaitanya Prasad and Rahul Singh.
The school fees are affordable and there are currently over 120 teachers who are educating 4,500 students from LKG to Class 12. Saint Michael’s School has nurtured several Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service officers, as well as athletes and social workers who have brought glory to the nation. Getting admission into the school is tough because of the complicated admission process.
St. Michael’s High School in Patna, also called SMHS, is a private Roman Catholic co-educational high school. The school’s current principal, Edison J. Armstrong, assumed office in January 2016, succeeding Peter Arockiasamy. Saint Michael the Archangel is the school’s patron saint. The school’s activities are regulated by the Central Board of Secondary Education in New Delhi.
Since 1968, the Jesuits of the Patna Province of the Society of Jesus have been overseeing the management of the school. In 1988, the school handed responsibility to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education in New Delhi, the institution prepares its students for the All India Secondary School (Class IX-X) and All India Senior School Certificate Examinations (Class XI-XII) conducted by the same board.
