Kalki 2898 AD’s dream run continues. After creating waves in San Diego where the makers launched it and then at the global box office, Nag Ashwin’s magnum opus starring Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, and Deepika Padukone was recently screened at the Moscow International Film Week. Russian and NRI film buffs attended the screening. Producers of Kalki 2898 AD, Swapna Dutt, and Priyanka Dutt, also graced the evening and were thrilled with the reception it received.
News18 Showsha caught up with the sister duo, who believe that the screening is an interesting addition to the laurels the film has garnered since its worldwide release on June 27. “It’s exciting. The film might have run its course, theatrically, but this felt like it was released again. A new audience watched the film. It’s a different culture here. So, we were nervous too, it.was a good kind of nervousness,” Priyanka told us exclusively.
According to Swapna, Kalki 2898 AD managed to take the offbeat route and set new norms in terms of a film’s marketing campaign, and with its Moscow screening, they’re happy to blaze the trail again. “It has been wonderful. The journey has been full and now it has taken a little fleet on its own. We’ve done something unconventional for Indian cinema. We launched its official title and the glimpse in San Diego. We haven’t done any regular forms of formatted promotions. We’ve done things very differently. And now, we landed up here. It feels incredible,” she remarked.
So, what has been the biggest takeaway from their Kalki 2898 AD journey? “The NRI kids born and brought up in America are now reading about the Mahabharata. That’s something amazing. We never thought this would happen. When people come up to me and tell me that their five-year-old or seven-year-old is reading the Mahabharata, that feels really good,” said Priyanka who’s also Nag’s wife.
For Swapna, however, watching Big B up close and personal and the love and support he lent to their passion project even as an audience is something that will always remain memorable. “Our hard work of four years is now coming to an end and this kind of an end is extremely rewarding. People from different countries are watching it in their languages and are loving it. Someone like Mr Amitabh Bachchan, who has seen everything in life and the best of cinema, went to the theatre four times to watch Kalki with a childlike energy,” she shared.
The Moscow International Film Week also had Telugu producer Dil Raju in attendance, who had exclusively spoken to us about the unanimous love Kalki 2898 AD received from the audience in the Russian capital. Even during and post its theatrical release, several members of the film fraternity like Ranveer Singh, Atlee, Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and SS Rajamouli, among many others, extended their best wishes to the team on social media. Sharing her thoughts on it, Swapna said, “It means a lot. It feels incredible when you see the Indian film fraternity coming together. It’s just fantastic. We’re all on the verge of being part of the global platform. The shoutout that we received from everyone made us feel so good.”
Resonating with her sibling, Priyanka, in a similar vein, further added, “It’s a big support. The love we received from different influential actors and actresses in its first weekend post-release. It felt like they all came together to market and advertise the film without asking for anything in return.”
