Priya Mani Raj and Prithviraj Sukumaran have worked together in a bunch of films – Raavanan, Sathyam, Ninaithale Inikkum, Thirakkatha, Pathinettam Padi and Kadhal Mudichu. And now, they’re all set to clash on the big screen as Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan will be locking horns this Eid on April 11.
In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Priya Mani reacts to the same and wishes Prithviraj luck for his portrayal of an anti-hero in the Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff starrer. “We haven’t had a conversation about the clash. We haven’t been in touch for quite a long time. But I obviously wish him well. I cannot wait to watch him as the antagonist in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. I know for a fact that he has nailed the part,” she says.
Lauding Prithviraj for the career he has built over the years and specifically for his performance in The Goat Life, a critical and commercial success, Priya Mani shares, “We’ve done six films together. And almost all of them have been super hits. He’s doing extremely well for himself. I’m so proud of him. He has taken the Malayalam industry to another level both with his acting and direction skills. I’ve been hearing a lot of lovely reports about The Goat Life. I’m hoping to watch it one day, hopefully soon.”
On a related note, Maidaan sees her playing Ajay Devgn’s onscreen wife. The shoot for the film began in August 2019 and it went on to suffer many delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mumbai cyclone and extensive VFX work. Recalling the time, Priya Mani tells us, “It does test your patience but once you come out of it, it shouldn’t matter. When you sign a project, there could be unforeseen delays. And the delays in Maidaan were for genuine reasons. But we never lost confidence.”
The Family Man actor, however, says that she would often worry about whether Maidaan would be able to see the light of the day. “It will be wrong if I say that I didn’t have doubts whether the film will release or not because times were such. Much like others, we were in doldrums. At the same time, we had a lot of faith in the story. We knew that it had its heart in the right place and the intention was right. A story like Maidaan needed to be told,” she states.
Crediting Ajay and Boney Kapoor for keeping at it without losing faith even during moments of crisis, she says, “Ajay sir had invested a lot more time in the film than me. I was fortunate enough that my portion was wrapped up significantly earlier because of which I could move on to shooting other projects. They were quite affected when the floods came. The set had to be reconstructed twice.”
Priya Mani continues, “My heart bled for Boney sir. But he’s such a positive person. He said that we would finish the film and release it for people to see irrespective of whatever happens. And that gave us a reason to not lose hope either.”
