Goa: Ekene Ikenwa had made a move to East Bengal from Salgaocar SC during the last transfer season but didn't survive at the Kolkata club for long.
With East Bengal not too happy with the striker's performance in the little game time he got during his stay, the club and the player mutually agreed on a loan deal to Salgaocar SC.
"We were looking for a fourth foreigner and had a few players on trials but were not satisfied with any of them. When we learned the news that Ekene was a free player, we got interested in signing him.
"Ekene knows the way we play as he has already played with the team previously," Bencherifa reasoned out the signing of Ekene Ikenwa.
Salgaocar are leading the I-League table after the first round of matches, but the Moroccan coach doesn't think it holds much significance as yet.
"It was only the first match and it didn't mean a lot besides boosting the morale and confidence of the boys. Nothing can be judged from this match," he said.
The Goan team's next I-League fixture is against Chirag United who are currently tied with Mumbai FC in the second place.
On being asked about facing the side from Kolkata on Tuesday, Bencherifa said, "Chirag is a good team also. Every match will be difficult. We have to work and I hope we continue with the way we started."
Salgaocar's top scorer of the last season Ekene Ikenwa could feature in the match against Chirag on December 7.
