Lionel Messi was spotted sharing the frame with Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday. Gov. DeSantis was present at the Inter Miami facility and as part of the visit, he even met the Argentine legend. Florida’s Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez was also spotted standing along with Messi and others. The interaction, however, did not go down well with many social media users who expressed their displeasure over the meeting. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas shared a picture of Messi standing next to the Florida Gov. “Welcome Ron DeSantis and Jeanette Nunez to the home of the freedom to dream Inter Miami,” read the post shared by Mas on X (formerly Twitter).

The post, however, drew sharp criticism from many who vented out their frustration in the comments. Reacting to the post, one social media user urged, “Keep futbol clean of politicians, especially our GOAT.”
Echoing a similar sentiment, another person commented, “Don’t make our GOAT a political prop.”
Expressing his desire to meet the Argentine World Cup winner, one user wrote, “Would be great if season ticket members could get a photo opportunity with Messi (or any of the players as originally advertised).”
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced yesterday that Florida will give $8 million to Miami-Dade County in order to improve the infrastructure around the stadium which is being built for the Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Inter Miami.
“We just don’t believe that we give money to build a sports stadium. People are going to want to go to that. Are they going to be able to get there? Is it going to cause more traffic? Our role, as state government, is not to give money to a team, but to create an environment where everyone can be successful. Infrastructure is a big part of that,” Ron DeSantis was quoted as saying by The Washington Post.
Lionel Messi is yet to make his return to action for Inter Miami, who are currently enjoying a five-point lead at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. In their last fixture, The Herons bagged a 4-3 win against Toronto FC in the Leagues Cup round of 32 on Thursday.
