Liverpool: Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge could make a shock return for the start of the Premier League after scoring in the Anfield club's 3-1 pre-season friendly victory over Newcastle at the Reds' Melwood training centre on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old has been out of action since sustaining an ankle injury while on international duty with England earlier in the year, forcing him to miss nearly the entirety of the club's pre-season.

But after making his comeback to competitive football against Celtic, the former Chelsea forward again saw action, scoring two penalties in the behind-closed-doors match and raising hopes of being included in the squad's opening game of the campaign against Stoke.

Liverpool summer transfer acquisition Luis Alberto scored the club's other goal, while Dan Gosling found the net for Newcastle.

Sturridge could join Alberto, Iago Aspas and Fabio Borini in Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers' plans for the game against Stoke, as last season's top-scorer Luis Suarez continues his 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic during a Premier League match last season.
