Tom Cruise To Return As Maverick In Top Gun 3? Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Spills Beans
The sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun came after 36 years when Top Gun: Maverick saw a theatrical release in 2022.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has good news for Top Gun fans. Recently, in an interview with Screen Rant, while he was promoting the upcoming action film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Bruckheimer hinted that they might make the third movie of the Top Gun franchise. The veteran producer said they ‘have a story’ for the third film based on an idea given by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. Bruckheimer did not mention when the idea would materialise into a movie, mostly owing to Tom Cruise’s busy schedule. Cruise, who is the protagonist of the Top Gun film, is currently shooting a Mission Impossible film.

Bruckheimer said, “It will be Tom Cruise. Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a wonderful story idea for it, and he (Tom Cruise) said I really like that, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it’s going to get made because Tom is so busy. He’s doing Mission: Impossible right now, he’s got a picture after it. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.” The sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun came after 36 years when Top Gun: Maverick saw a theatrical release in 2022. It appears that one might see the third film of the franchise sooner than its legacy sequel.

Top Gun: Maverick saw big box office success after it raked in over $1.4 billion. The film’s theatrical release was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic but despite the delays, Tom Cruise insisted on releasing the film in theatres as opposed to giving it an OTT release.

During a press meeting at the Cannes Film Festival, Cruise said that he never considered Top Gun: Maverick for an OTT release out of his love for cinema. He said, “I make movies for the big screen.” The 61-year-old actor added, “Cinema is my love, my passion. I always go to movies when they come out. I’ll put my cap on and sit in the audience with everyone. I’ve spent a lot of time with theatre owners. I go to cinemas and there are people there who serve popcorn and run these theatres. I tell them: “I know what you’re going through, just know we’re making ‘Mission: Impossible’, ‘Top Gun’ is coming out.”
