Guwahati: Floods continue to wreak havoc in Assam where 1.2 lakh people have been affected affected as surging water from overflowing rivers submerge 27 more villages, according to Assam State Disaster Management Authority(ASDMA).

About 500 families were badly affected in Majuli, a large river island in the Brahmaputra river. Across the state, about 1.2 lakh people have been affected in almost 450 villages.

Dhemaji district is worst hit followed by Chirang, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Sivasagar. Reports say around 6,500 hectares of agricultural land has also been destoyed across 11 districts.

As per ASDMA data, nine relief camps have been set up in Dhemaji and Chirang districts and about 3,000 people have taken shelter there.

Meanwhile, the mighty Brahmaputra at Nematighat in Jorhat district and Dhubri district, and its tributaries Burhidehing at Khowang in Dibrugarh, Desang at Nanglamuragat in Sibsagar and Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta are flowing above the danger level.

The other districts are Tinsukia, Nagaon, Golaghat, Kamrup, Karimganj, Lakhimpur and Morigaon.
