KARIMNAGAR: As many as 17 persons were killed and 60 others were injured in two separate road accidents in Karimnagar district on Wednesday.Five women were killed and several others of a marriage party were injured when the van in which they were travelling collided head-on with another speeding van near Renikunta village on Rajiv Rahadari.The victims were returning from Gattubutukur in Gangadhara mandal, to Hyderabad after attending a marriage. The incident occurred at around 1.30 a.m. on Tuesday night. The deceased have been identified as Mutyala Vijya (40), Shanigarampu Saramma (60), B Leelavathi (25),C Buchamma (50) and N Kalamma(38). The van driver Kundarapu Sadanandam, 27, belonging to Kuchampalli of Husnabad mandal died at MGM Hospital in Warangal on Wednesday while undergoing treatment. The remaining injured including the bride and bridegroom were shifted to a private hospital in Karimnagar. The police registered a case and are investigating. The driver of the salt-laden van was in an inebriated condition when the accident happened. In another incident, ten persons including two kids were killed and four others were injured, when a lorry in which they were travelling overturned after a brake failure in Kondagattu ghat.The incident occurred when several devotees from Dharmaram village of Morthad mandal in Nizamabad district were returning after a visit to Hanuman temple at Kondagattu. Civil supplies minister D Sridhar B Babu and government whip Arepalli Mohan, collector Smita Sabharwal and SP V Ravinder visited the sites. The minister, announced an ex gratia of `50,000 to the kin of the deceased.
