CHENNAI: Officials of Blue Cross of India intercepted a lorry that was overloaded with 34 bulls, on the Tambaram bypass road on Wednesday night. The bulls were being transported to Kerala for slaughter. Police, who registered a case, said they arrested the lorry driver for transporting the cattle in a cruel manner. Blue Cross officials said that Prasad, a mini-tempo driver, had informed them over phone on Wednesday night that he had noticed a lorry overloaded with bulls on the bypass road near the toll plaza. Soon, Dawn Williams, general manager of Blue Cross of India, Chennai rushed to the spot, accompanied by a volunteer Raghav. The lorry driven by Balasubramaniam of Oddanchatram, Dindigul, was intercepted and taken to the Tambaram police station. “The person who informed us thought the bulls were almost dead, as he had seen their heads drooping out of the lorry,” the GM said.Officials further said that the lorry which bore a Tamil Nadu registration number, was loaded with 34 bulls on January 29 in Gajali village, Andhra Pradesh, after they were purchased in Orissa.Blue Cross officials pointed out that the bulls were not given any food or water and a total of 34 bulls were crammed into a single lorry. “The condition of five of the bulls is bad and one is critical. Some of them are suffering from foot and mouth disease. As per law, an animal needs to have a space of two square metres while being transported,” Blue Cross officials said.Officials said that transportation of cattle in this manner was being done regularly from AP to Kerala, via TN, as these States were lenient in enforcing the law in these cases. Police said the cleaner was let off.
