6 Dead, 3 Still Missing Hours After Boat Capsizes in Srinagar's Jhelum River
Srinagar Boat Capsize: Incessant rains over the last couple of days have led to an increase in the water levels of several water bodies, including Jhelum.

At least four people were killed and many went missing on Tuesday after a boat capsized in Jhelum river in Srinagar’s Gandbal area. A rescue operation has been launched and the State Disaster Response Force team has been deployed.

The deceased have been identified as Firdousa (30), Razia (18), Shabir (23), Gulzar (30), Tanvir and Mudasir, while three rescued people are undergoing treatment in hospital.

Sources told News18 that some of the occupants of the boat were possibly students who cross the river by boat.

Kashmir’s Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, IGP, Srinagar Deputy Commissioner and SSP were present at Gandbal Batwara to monitor rescue operations launched by Srinagar administration, SDRF, NDRF and police.

State’s former CM Omar Abdullah posted on X: “Deeply concerned by the reports of a boat capsizing on the river Jhelum at Gandabal, Batwara near Srinagar. I hope & pray that all on board this boat are rescued safely & swiftly.”

Incessant rains over the last couple of days have led to an increase in the water levels of several water bodies, including Jhelum.

According to a report in Greater Kashmir, heavy rains coupled with defunct drainage system caused waterlogging of major roads in the summer capital on Monday.

Commuters were quoted as saying that as the dug-up roads dotted with massive potholes were covered with rainwater, it became difficult for them to navigate through the city.

The report stated that scores of commuters had narrow escapes after passing through massive potholes and dug-up roads.

Residents were quoted as saying that most of the roads in Downtown areas, including Khanyar, Babademb, Nowhatta were waterlogged. They said that the situation is also the same in uptown areas, including Bemina and Batamaloo.
