CHENNAI: Eighty-seven candidates who had applied for the Tamil Nadu engineering admissions this year have secured 200/200 in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, of which 16 have scored full marks in their fourth optional subject of Biology or Computer Science. This is a huge jump compared to last year where only 29 students secured full marks in three subjects. The merit list has been prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In case of more than one candidate getting the same marks, inter-se-merit among such candidates is determined based on various criteria, including percentage of marks in the fourth optional subject, date of birth (the elder student is given preference) and the random number assigned.Sources said the date of birth plays a crucial role in resolving the issue of ties since most students have scored equal marks even after taking the marks of the optional subject into consideration. As many as 1,500 engineering aspirants with a cut-off between 200 and 199 would participate in the first day of engineering counselling under the single window system on July 8, said V Rhymend Uthariaraj, secretary, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions. He said, 3,000 to 3,500 candidates would be covered during subsequent days. “The lowest cut off for this year is 85,” he said. He added that the counselling for vocational courses would start on July 1.
