CHENNAI:  From being used to treat only single blood vessel diseases, angioplasty has evolved to handle ailments even in the more complicated areas of the human heart such as the ‘left main’, experts said at the Continuing Medical Education Programme, held at the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, as part of the World Heart Day on Thursday. Explaining the procedure of angioplasty, President of the Cardiological Society of India Dr Mathew Samuel said that it involved an intervention where blocks in the vessels of the heart were relieved without stopping the functioning of the heart and thereby reducing the risk involved in the treatment.  Pointing out the exponential growth in the availability of such interventions in the country, he said that the number of such labs was currently around 550 and over 1,17,000 coronary interventions were done in 2010. Elaborating on the advances in treating heart diseases, he said that a fair bit of research had gone into the use of stem cell therapy though there were still doubts on which cell to use and the dosage. Dr GH Mudge, Professor at the Harvard Medical School, delivered a technical lecture on cardio transplants at the event.
