Agitating students meet chancellor

Students of Plus III second year from Rourkela met Chancellor and Governor  MC Bhadare on the sidelines of the 25th convocation of Sambalpur University here on Monday.

The students have been protesting the dismal results in English (compulsory) of Arts stream (pass and Honours). They submitted a memorandum demanding grace marks to all students instead of holding the examination afresh.

Reports said the students of Rourkela Municipal College and Sushilabati Government Women’s College, after failing to move the authorities of their respective colleges, staged a dharna in front of the University on Monday. They alleged that the marks were most unexpected and raised a hue and cry over valuation.

Undeterred by rains, the students who were held up by the police for long, finally met the Chancellor.

The delegation alleged that they were being pressurised for re-examination and said valuation of the English subject has been done causally with most of the students scoring between zero and 15.

It is learnt that the Chancellor assured the students that they would be made available with photocopy of their answer sheets and no re-examination would be held.

After the results were declared on July 19, the students had gheraoed the Vice- Chancellor (VC) over the issue on July 25.

The belligerent mood of the students led the VC to convene an urgent meeting of the university syndicate on July 26.

In the meeting, it was resolved to hold special (Repeat and Improvement) examination in English (Compulsory) for both the pass and Honours students with a large number of students having flunked the examination.

Moreover, the VC was also authorised to constitute a committee to inquire into the dismal performance of the students in the examination.
