Ahmedabad attack: top militant held in Hyderabad
A top militant, who allegedly killed 3 policemen in Ahmedabad was arrested along with five of his associates.

Hyderabad: A top militant, who allegedly killed three policemen here and in Ahmedabad and carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head, was on Wednesday arrested along with five of his associates.

"Viqaruddin Ahmed who is responsible for three incidents of attacks on police personnel, in which two policemen were killed and as many injured in Hyderabad city, was arrested along with five of his associates," said City Police Commissioner A K Khan.

Five of Ahmed's associates Syed Amjad alias Suleman, Zakir, Mohd Haneef, Riaz and Sayeed were also apprehended from different parts of Hyderabad city, he said. Police seized three weapons with 35 rounds, 4 pistol magazines, a dagger, a knife, CDs besides four bikes from Viqaruddin and others. Viqaruddin, against whom the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the City Police have registered a case, was the prime suspect for carrying out another attack at Shah-Ali Banda locality here killing constable U Ramesh on May 14 this year. After the Shah-Ali Banda incident, the police had announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for any person providing informtion leading to his arrest.

Viqaruddin Ahmed, alias Viqar, is the head of militant outfit Tahreek Galva-e-Islam (TGI) which is suspected to be behind shoot-outs and killing of the police personnel. Khan said "so far we have not found any links of his organization to any of other terror outfits." He said Viqaruddin was "personally involved" in the attacks on policeman in Hyderabad and is also responsible for the killing of a police constable in Ahmedabad when the police had tried to stop the members of TGI from committing a bank robbery there.

Viqaruddin had allegedly opened fire on the sleuths of counter-intelligence cell at I S Sadan in December 2008 in which a head constable was injured. Viqaruddin is also wanted in connection with a shootout at Falaknuma here on May 18 last year, the second anniversary of Mecca Masjid bomb blasts, in which a home guard was killed and a police constable sustained injuries, Khan said.
