MADURAI: A group of people from Alanganallur have sought permission from Madurai District Collector U Sagayam for conducting jallikattu (taming the bull). At the grievances day meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday, they submitted a letter to this effect. Geetha Sekar, president of the Alanganallur town panchayat, was also one of the signatories to the letter. “We are conducting jallikattu strictly adhering the rules imposed by the government. Alanganallur jallikattu is being conducted as a Government festival, with the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endownments Department and Tourism Department taking active part. So, we are seeking permission to conduct the festival on January 17,” the petitioners said. The petition comes in the wake of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF)’s notification banning use of bulls as performing animals.
