VELLORE: Collector S Nagarajan on Friday inaugurated sugarcane crushing operations at the spruced-up Ambur Cooperative Sugar Mills for the current season.The unit, started in 1960, is one of the oldest mills in the district run by the cooperative department. What was started with a crushing capacity of 800 tonnes initially, has now been enhanced to 1,400 tonnes. The optimum crushing capacity is 2.4 lakh tonnes.In the last crushing season, which was between December 13, 2010 to March 24, 2011, 1.27 lakh tonnes of cane was crushed leading to the production of 1.14 lakh quintals of sugar. For the current season, the mill plans to crush 1.65 lakh tonnes between December 16, 2011 to April 17, 2012 and achieve a target production of 1.58 lakh quintal sugar, Triguna Ayyappadurai, special officer of the mill, said.Sugarcane for the mill is being supplied by farmers from the taluks of Ambur, Gudiyattam, part of V ellore and part of Arni in Tiruvannamalai district. Around 7,000 acres of cane farms in the region have been registered with the mill and it expects to add another 500 acres shortly. Chief engineer of mills Umapathy, Chief chemist Moorthy, Chief Cane officer Sayinathan, Ambur municipal chairperson Sangeetha Balasubramani and Madanur union chairman Jothiramalinga Raja were present.
