An organisation of Muslim academicians of Aligarh Muslim University on Monday condemned the Samajwadi Party government's ban on VHP's 84 kosi yatra and demanded release of those arrested in its connection.

Forum of Muslim Studies and Analysis (FMSA) passed a resolution to demand the release of the VHP leaders arrested on Sunday in a massive crackdown by the UP administration. "FMSA has passed a resolution on Monday condemning the ban on the VHP yatra as the entire episode has been clearly stage managed by the Samajwadi Party government to stoke communal passions in the state," a statement issued by Secretary FMSA Jasim Mohammad said.

"The Constitution has guaranteed the right to worship and perform all religious rites to all people. This fundamental right has to be defended so long there is no threat to peace," it said. FMSA alleged that the move by ruling Samajwadi Party was an attempt to woo Muslim voters.

Instead of banning such yatras, FMSA said the state government should ensure that no one is allowed to disturb the communal amity so that the life and properties, especially of the Muslim minority is protected. Top VHP leaders Pravin Togadia and Ashok Singhal were among around 1,700 people arrested in a massive crackdown by the UP administration on Sunday.
