BANGALORE: A programme was held at the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) public school or more commonly called the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Srirampuram to inaugurate the mid-day meal programme. This will mark the supply of free meals to 160 students of the school from this day forward. The school had previously held a free medical health check up camp in association with B G S Global Hospitals in order to create awareness.The atmosphere was that of a festive one as kids enjoyed the food provided to them and spent the rest of the afternoon playing in the grounds.The school provides education to 120 students, mostly from underpriviledged backgrounds of the society.The school follows the CBSE syllabus.Books as well as uniforms for the academic year were recently distributed to the students. Ramanuja, the chairman of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, said, “If this kind of model schools are successful, we are thinking of implementing it throughout the country. We would also like to go beyond education.We wish to improve the facilities present here and take the schools to greater heights.” The chief guest for the event was Padma Bhushan awardee B Saroja Devi.Crowds thronged the place in order to get a sight of this famous yesteryear actress.Additional security was employed in order to control the gathering. She served food with her own hands to the absolute delight of the kids and their parents. Speaking on the occasion, she said, “It is a very good venture.The facilities provided here were a pleasant surprise to me. I wish to see them grow up to be responsible citizens of the world. It is a great opportunity for them to achieve success in life.”Also gracing the celebrations was MLA Dinesh who asserted that he would do his best to help the school reach its objectives.The director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Dr Mathoor Krishnamurti, was also present.Suresh, the secretary of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, informed City Express that the introduction of the meals were a progressive step for the development of these schools.He said, “After we conducted the health camp, we knew that providing food would be our next project.We wanted to ensure that the kids are hale and healthy.By introducing the scheme, we will also be encouraging them to come to school and learn.”
