As demolition crew mounted the Anna Arch and a giant crane measured up the extremities of the behemoth on Saturday night, most of the residents of NSK Nagar who looked on, described it as an ‘emotional’ time.
However, there was nothing even remotely emotional about the traffic pile-up that choked Anna Nagar after the arterial Anna Arch Road was shut through Sunday.
According to Highways Department officials, who were supervising the demolition work, the delay was due to a malfunction in one of the crane’s cutting devices. It effectively meant that the demolition time doubled. It was expected to be completed only by Monday morning.
The official, who spoke to Express was honest enough to add “hopefully” to the statement, which might cause nightmares for traffic cops ahead of the Monday morning traffic rush.
“We have deployed additional personnel to handle the traffic rush, but with such an integral road blocked, it is extremely stressful,” admitted a traffic inspector.
Given that the Anna Arch Road was cordoned off from both sides, vehicles had to make a long detour — either through Shenoy Nagar or Koyambedu — to reach Anna Nagar or Ayanavaram.
