Nalgonda: Mild tension prevailed in Haliya mandal headquarters in Nagarjunasagar constituency on Sunday when Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Congress activists clashed over the arrest of TDP leader Tera Chinnapa Reddy. Police arrested Reddy in Hyderabad on Saturday for allegedly circulating defamatory SMSes against panchayat raj minister K Jana Reddy.
The TDP Nalgonda district committee had given a bandh call in Nagarjunasagar constituency denouncing the arrest of Chinnapa Reddy on Sunday. The followers of both Chinnapa Reddy and Jana Reddy took out rallies in Haliya mandal headquarters. The TDP activists urged the shop owners to co-operate with the bandh while the supporters of Jana Reddy asked the shop owners to run their business as usual. This led both party activists to enter into heated arguments.
However, the police intervened and arrested the agitators. The bandh passed off peacefully in the other mandals under the Nagarjunsagar constituency. The TDP fielded Chinnapa Reddy against the panchayat raj minister K Jana Reddy in Nagarjunasagar constituency during 2009 general elections. Jana Reddy won with a margin of 5,000 votes.
Recently, Chinnapa Reddy alleged that Jana Reddy earned Rs 5,000 crore illegally and invested the sum in power projects in other states. Chinnapa Reddy’s followers also accused Jana Reddy of taking above 100 acres of land belonging to Chinnapa Reddy under the Land Sealing Act, by abusing his official position.
Three days ago, Jana Reddy lodged a case against Chinnapa Reddy with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) saying that the latter had sent defamatory SMSes against him, following which the TDP leader was arrested.
