Asiad Chess: Medal hopes Anand, Humpy pull out
Anand and Humpy's withdrawal has left India with no option than to send the same team that played the Olympiad.

New Delhi: India's aspirations of a medal in the chess event of the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou, China, suffered a severe blow on Friday when the World Champion Viswanathan Anand announced his unavailability, citing prior commitments as the reason.

Along with Anand, Koneru Humpy has also pulled out of the Games. Humpy, too, said that other commitments would keep her from participating in the multi-discipline event.

With this, India may have lost a chance to win a medal that was more or less certain. During Doha Games in 2006, Humpy had won two gold medals.

Anand and Humpy's withdrawal has left India with no option than to send the same team that represented the country in the recent Olympiad.

Team:

Men: K Sasikiran, P Hari Krishna, Surya Shekhar Ganguly, GN Gopal and B Adhiban

Women: D Harika, Tania Sachdev, Eesha Karavade, S Meenakshi and Nisha Mohota
