BHUBANESWAR: A youth taking part in a recruitment drive for police constables died on way to the hospital here on Thursday. The constable aspirant, Sk Inbad Ali, collapsed during the physical test and was rushed to Capital Hospital where he was declared brought dead.Ali, a 22-year-old aspirant from Kurang Sasan of Cuttack Sadar Police Station, fell short of the finishing line where his two brothers were waiting for him. He developed signs of fatigue, slowed down and collapsed. The medical team which was present at the spot rushed in and Ali was immediately shifted to Capital Hospital where he was declared received dead. Ali apparently had a medical condition but no such history was mentioned in his undertaking. The incident at the 7th Battalion of Commissionerate Police led to commotion as other candidates tried to block the road at Kalinga Hospital Square. Police chased the agitators and dispersed them from the spot. Some of the agitators also damaged the traffic post and uprooted sign posts. At least 7,000 candidates had turned up at the 7th Battalion ground for the test which was part of the state-wide constable drive undertaken by the StatePolice.  Director-General of Police MM Praharaj held a discussion with Commissioner of Police Bijay Sharma, about the incident following which a compensation of ` 10,000 was sanctioned for the kin of Ali from the Red Cross Society of Commissionerate Police. “We are trying to explore other forms of compensation too,” Sharma said.Constable recruitment, a big exercise, had started on October 15 at 29  centres across the State. The drive here was being conducted by Commissionerate of Police. “It is an unfortunate incident but not unusual as similar incidents have happened in the past,” Additional DGP (Training) V Thiagarajan said. Sharma echoed similar feelings. Ali, who belonged to a family of policemen - at least two of his brothers were constables with the State Police - had been trying to get into the force since 2008. He had flunked in different recruitment tests.Since the recruitment process involves rigorous physical tests including running, rope climbing, swimming, Thiagarajan said, candidates are asked to take precaution if they do not feel up to the event. Undertakings are also submitted by the aspirants. The constable recruitment process which has been under scrutiny in the past now witnesses strict surveillance. CCTVs are used and videography is also conducted to keep the process transparent.
