Amid the controversy around eminent writers and filmmakers returning their awards citing intolerance in the country, President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said that "awards are recognition of merit" and they "should be cherished".
Addressing a gathering on the occasion of Press Day, the President said, "Sensitive minds sometimes get disturbed by some incidents in society...emotions should not overrun reasons."
Referring to the issue of intolerance and award wapsi, the President said that "disagreement should be expressed through debate", adding, "India has always been able to self correct whenever such a need has arisen".
Talking about the role of media in the society, President Mukherjee said, "As India marches forward into the 21st century, it is extremely important that free press of India remains strong and vibrant."
"Media must act as a watchdog of public interest and give voice to the marginalised. Journalists must bring to public notice the array of ills and deprivations that continue to beset large number of our people," said the President.
He added, "Sensationalism should not substitute for objective, accurate and dispassionate reporting. While opinion is free, facts should be sacred."
