CUTTACK: In a shocking incident, an 18-month-old baby boy was allegedly murdered at Sainso village under Cuttack Sadar police limits. The death of the baby sparked off outrage and indignation among the local populace and they torched a police vehicle, that had gone to the village for investigation, charging the cops with gross inaction in the case. Chintu, son of Abhimanyu Mohapatra of the village, had gone missing on Wednesday night. Anxious parents and relatives had then lodged a complaint with the Sadar police. A PCR van had also visited the village immediately and had conducted a search for the missing child. After looking at several places, the team had returned. But on Thursday morning, the child was found dead and floating in a pond just behind Mohapatra’s house. Police were informed and a PCR van was again rushed to the village. However, the death of the child had got the villagers enraged. They accused the police of not taking swift action and charged at the police personnel. The cops were also subjected to stone pelting and the mob torched the PCR van that came in. Senior officers, including DCP Praveen Kumar, rushed to the village and assured them of effective action in the connection. Normalcy has returned to the area even though there is visible tension. While police investigations is on, the death of the child is being linked by the locals to a dispute between the families of Abhimanyu and his relative and neighbour Mayadhar Mohapatra. Mayadhar, his two daughters, son and an acquaintance Munna Panda of the nearby Talabada village allegedly had a run-in with Abhimanyu’s family over some issue. The family of Abhimanyu alleged that the baby could have been killed over that dispute. However, police said the exact cause of the death of the child could only be ascertained after the post-mortem report comes in. “We are investigating the death and looking at all angles in the case,” the DCP said.
