Nominees of BJD, BJP and Congress filed their nomination papers on Saturday for the byelection to Zilla Parishad zone 3.
Chhabilata Mohapatra of BJD, Manwasota Samal of Congress and Gouri Mohapatra of BJP submitted two sets of nomination papers before the Sub-Collector, the returning officer.
The ZP zone in Khaira block was vacated after Jyotshnarani Das resigned from the post. Das was elected on a BJD ticket and also won the election as a Panchayat Samiti member from Haripur panchayat.
Though Das had opted for the panchayat samiti (PS) member to become the Chairperson of the Khaira PS, a rebel Jayanti Mahala managed to capture the post with the BJD-supported members.
As many as 35,177 voters from Kupari, Ratina, Gadapokhari, Bartana, Kainthagadia, Haripur, Bausagadia and Nayakhandi panchayats would exercise their franchise in the by-poll scheduled on August 17.
Sub-Collector Paresh Marandi said while the scrutiny of the papers would be held July 23, the last date for withdrawal of nomination has been scheduled for July 26.
“After the vote on August 17, the counting will be held the next day but the result would be declared on August 23,” he added.
Poll observers said while the contest will be limited to the BJD and Congress in the zone, the supporters of Jyotshnarani would be a hindrance for Chhabilata as the former was denied ticket this time despite her victory in the last election.
On the other hand, the Congress has once again reposed faith in Samal who lost to Jyotshnarani by 309 votes. The observers said her winning chances are more this time, as the BJD nominee Chhabilata may not be successful in turning the situation in her favour because she had lost as a PS member from Ratina panchayat in the last election.
