Band Baajaa Baarat Vs Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Band Baajaa Baarat Vs Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Looks like Yash Raj films has finally woken up to the contemporary woman

While drawing parallels between two Yash Raj movies Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) and recent release Band Baajaa Baarat, it is clear that Yash Raj Films has finally started recognising the importance of talking today’s language.

The male character

Suriji or Raaj (Shah Rukh Khan) seems like an unreal character, a grown up man who goes to office and gets back home. He succumbs to his circumstances and is insistent that his lady-love accept him the way he is.

Bittoo (Ranveer Singh) in BBB is a young, chirpy enterprising guy who wants to be successful and independent. He makes his mistakes and learns from it. He is not willing to spend his life according to the dictates of his father or family.

The look

The small town of Punjab where Rab Ne…is based looks surreal. And so does the bungalow that Suri lives in. Also the hair salon and the larger than life garage where Raj and Tani practise their dance have an artificial look to it.

BBB is based in real Delhi. The untidy boys’ hostel, the travel by local transport, the unkempt corners of girls’ hostel, cable wires, casual pyjamas (same one in different shots) gives audience a glimpse of their everyday life.

Female character

Tani (Anushka Sharma) is a helpless girl whose world has totally shattered after her father’s death. She agrees to marry Suriji.

Shruti is a confident, independent girl who makes her own decisions. She is comfortable with her feelings. She initiated the love-making and also the ‘happy end-kiss’. She wants to make a career for her own, has strong principles and is ambitious. She even buys the car for the family.

The quest

The only aim of Suriji in the film is to make Tani happy. And that of Tani is, to be a dutiful wife. Archaic.

Bittoo and Shruti are today’s enterprising youngsters who want to concentrate on their career. They are not afraid of making mistakes and are willing to learn from them. Also, Bittoo (Ranveer Singh) is a farmer’s son and Shruti (Anushka Sharma) is the daughter of a middle-class salaried man. They both are not good at conversing in English. Characters with flaws – like all of us in real life.

Communication

The biggest turn-off of the movie is ‘leaving everything to God’ and ‘close your eyes and the face you see is the one you love’.

It is subtly shown that Shruti and Bittoo are net-savvy just like the youngsters today. They do a thorough research on their prospective clients.

Relationship

Suriji and Tani’s relationship is unbelievable. They are neither friends nor companions.

Shruti and Bittoo are friends, business partners who gradually fall in love. BBB is closer to today’s actual life and that seems to have worked for the movie and also for YRF. Thank you YRF for finally waking up to the real woman of today.
