West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has accepted the resignation of West Bengal Prison Minister and East Midnapore MLA Akhil Giri in connection with the alleged harassment of a woman forest range officer.
Both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress had askedGiri to either apologise or resign from his post after a video surfaced of him verbally abusing a female forest range officer.
The governor signed the cabinet reshuffle file after returning from disaster-hit Kerala. Giri’s resignation letter is said to have been accepted thereafter. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered an investigation into the matter.
Sources confirmed that Governor Bose had requested the Chief Minister to investigate the woman forest range officer’s matter so that the common people do not lose their trust into the government.
BJP has already targeted the TMC on the issue of threats to women rangers of the forest department. Rajya Sabha MP and West Bengal BJP Chief Spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya demanded not only an unconditional apology to the female ranger and Giri’s resignation, but also backed legal action against the now-former minister.
West Bengal TMC president Subrata Bakshi had asked the MLA from East Midnapore to either resign or apologise for using abusive language against the ranger. Giri said “the party gave me two options that is either resign or face dismissal. I have resigned. I can apologise to the chief minister but not to a public servant.”
