Nowadays, there is a high risk of losing money through a mere OTP on your phone. The scammers can pose as someone you know and take advantage of the knowledge to steal all the money. Local18 has reported on a similar case from West Bengal, where a man ended up losing money worth lakhs.
According to Local18, the incident occurred with a man named Rezaul Islam, a resident of Dogachhia, West Bengal. The reports state that he got a phone call with the name Bidyut Bhaban. The man on the call told Rezaul that he was speaking from the power building to inform him about an update on the phone. If he fails to complete the update, they will cut his property’s electric supply, the unknown caller said to Rezaul. He added that the process will cost only Rs 13.
After the call, Rezaul received a message link and believing the caller’s words, he tapped on that link. As soon as he clicked, Rs 95,000 were deducted from his bank account and his SIM card became inactive, Local18 reported further.
Feeling helpless, Rezaul Islam ran to the bank but it was of no use. Then, he went to the Deganga police station and filed a complaint. The officials told him the matter was under investigation. Later, the unfortunate man found out that around Rs 6 lakh had been stolen from his bank account. The money was taken from his account in several breaks and intervals, like Rs 1 lakh, then Rs 10,000, Rs 20,000 or Rs 50,000. All the while, he did not receive a single message of money deduction, since his phone was out of service.
Local18 reported that Rezaul did not receive much help from the administration so he complained to the Cyber Crime branch and the matter is still under investigation.
