Amid soaring temperatures, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced a 10% cut in supply to those who use water between 40 lakh and 2 crore litres per day from April 10, reported The Indian Express.
The move is expected to affect several high-rise apartments, and large gated communities, among other large establishments.
The BWSSB had earlier announced a 20% water supply cut for 38 bulk users, who consume over two crore litres of water every day. With the decision, the board began saving nearly 10 Million Litres per Day (MLD) daily.
BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar V met the bulk users, who consume between 40 lakh and 2 crore litres of water per day on Monday and advised them to adopt the five principles of the “green star challenge” — to adopt water conservation technologies, increase the use of treated water, technology to monitor borewells, dig rainwater harvesting pits and create awareness to users on these principles.
BWSSB had launched a green star challenge for restaurants, bulk users, and apartment complexes.
Meanwhile, the board has started supplying recycled water for construction activities from Monday.
The water supply board, had, in its March order, banned the use of potable water for construction activities, road maintenance works, and vehicle wash among other non-drinking purposes.
IMD issues heatwave alert
The Met Office has issued a heatwave warning for several districts in Karnataka for April. According to the alert, the state will face above-normal heatwave conditions, with positive anomalies ranging from two to five days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), most parts of North Interior Karnataka (NIK) districts and select districts from the South Interior Karnataka (SIK) region are expected to experience these above-normal heatwave days. The affected districts include Chitradurga, Davanagere, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, Bengaluru Urban, and Bengaluru Rural.
