THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is not certain whether this little one holds the capacity to burden the big expectations upon him. Born into the family of veteran actor Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair, 9-year-old Kailasveswar S Nair has made his first little step into his big dreams. On Tuesday, his movie was premiered at the Kalabhavan theatre here, where a shy boy, shedding the over-enthusiasm usually flaunted by young kids his age, took comfort beside his parents. Though he has made tiny appearances in short films earlier, ‘Deivathinte Noolpaavakal’, directed by Arun A R, in which he portrays the role of Kannan, is his first full-length acting attempt. Kannan is a cancer-afflicted boy in the 22-minute short film, which tells the plight of a crippled father seeking money to treat his son. Being Kottarakkara’s great-grandson, Kailas falls into the lineage of Sobha Mohan, Saikumar and Vinu Mohan, all from the family who have made their mark in the Malayalam film industry. Kailas is the grandson of Kottarakkara’s daughter Geetha Gopalakrishnan. While participating in a camp organised by the National Film Academy for young film directors in the capital city a few months ago, Kailas incidentally got selected to the film as the director of the film Arun was also present there. “I had found the traces of a professional actor in his mannerisms during the camp. He proved it while acting for the film, he sometimes used his own style while shooting,” says Arun. “His calm and collected behaviour seems to prove advantageous for his performance of a cancer-afflicted child in the film. We also thought of encouraging him in acting, as he is sure to bear acting in his genes. The great ‘sacrifice’ he made for the film was to cut off his thick shiny hair,” says mother Lekshmi Shaji, who is a news reader with Jai Hind TV. Kailas summed up his experience of acting in the movie in a single phrase- “I was afraid.” The words were accompanied by a cute smile on his lips. His father, Adv Shaji G Nair, brought a huge battalion of family members for the preview of the movie. Among the audience was his grandma Geetha, second of Sreedhara Menon’s eight children. The preview at Kalabhavan theatre was inaugurated by Minister K B Ganeshkumar. A fourth standard student of Sabarigiri Residential School at Anchal, there has been a huge support for the child artist from the school. “The school authorities honoured him with a memento soon after he finished acting in the film and encouraged him too,” Lekshmi adds.
