Thiruvananthapuram: The State Bank of India, Treasury branch, located near the south gate of Government Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, was attacked on Wednesday by those supporting the two-day all-India strike called by various trade unions.
At 10am, a group of people arrived at the branch and reportedly demanded that the staff shut down operations. They allegedly ransacked the premises, manhandled the manager and broke computers.
The manager said they will lodge a complaint with the police and submit CCTV footage of the attack. It was not immediately clear if the group comprised protesters or any other elements.
Rail transport was also hit on day two of the national trade union strike, with protestors blocking the passage of trains in Kerala. It started off in Thiruvananthapuram with protestors staging a sit-in in front of Venad Express at Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway station at 5am.
The train could resumed its journey only after police personnel arrived at the scene to arrest and remove the protestors. The service commenced 45 minutes later at 5:45 am. Other trains that were delayed include Kollam-Ernakulam Passenger, Thiruvananthapuram-Madurai Amritha Express, Shoranur-Ernakulam Passenger and Chennai-Egmore Guruvayoor Express.
The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC)-owned buses remained off the roads for the second consecutive day. Private buses, autorickshaw and taxi services were also not available in most places.
