New Delhi: India's football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has raised a storm by announcing to the Indian Olympic association that he will not carry the Olympic torch when it passes through India.
Bhaichung said he took the decision to show solidarity with the Tibetans and with the Buddhist ideal of non-violence. He's a man known for his non-controversial nature, however, his decision has come as a shock to the IOA and the sports community.
“My decision not to carry the Olympic torch is entirely personal because I am against the violence and oppression in Tibet. I am not doing this for an organisation, nor am I asking others to join me. So it's not a political move,” Bhaichung told CNN-IBN.
However, many sportspeople see it as nothing but a political move and many feel that the Olympics are more important than political issues.
For Tibetans in India, Bhaichung's move has come as a huge boost to a cause they have been fighting for many years.
The Olympics in China have put the focus back on Tibet in an unprecedented way, but Bhaichung Bhutia's decision is the first concrete action an athlete has taken against China.
