Ahmedabad: Gujarat BJP leader and former state minister Jay Narayan Vyas on Wednesday took a dig at the educational qualifications of the new Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das.

Referring to the MA (History) degree of the RBI chief, Vyas said he hoped that the RBI governor will not make the central bank itself history.

"The New RBI Governor Das's educational qualification is MA (History). Hope and Pray he doesn't make RBI also a History. May God Bless the New Arrival!! (sic)" Vyas tweeted.

Vyas, who was health and family welfare minister in Gujarat till 2012, has been sidelined in the party now. He lost the Assembly elections in 2012 and 2017.

Das, a former bureaucrat, was named the RBI governor on Tuesday following Urjit Patel's sudden exit after an unprecedented rift with the government. He was the economic affairs secretary and was also India's Sherpa to the G-20.

Das has also been the target of ridicule on social media over his educational qualifications vis-a-vis his predecessors Patel and Raghuram Rajan who had doctorates in economics. In fact, his education has been brought up so much, Google trends show that people started searching for his educational qualifications soon after the announcement.

But finance minister Arun Jaitley said that Das has the "right credentials" to head the RBI. He has done an advanced financial management course from IIM Bangalore and a course in development banking and institutional credit from the NIBM, Pune. He also got in-service professional training in financial management from the Institute of Public Enterprises. However, the length of these courses or training is not clear.

"Das has been a very senior and an experienced civil servant. He has almost his entire career in the management of finances and economic management of the country both, when he was in the state government of Tamil Nadu and also when he was in the Government of India in the Ministry of Finance," said Jaitley.
