A race has began in the party for the Mayoral post with several names doing the rounds.

New Delhi: A day after BJP wrested power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, a race began in the party for the Mayoral post with several names doing the rounds.

While an "informal consensus" has been arrived at on the nominees for the Standing Committee Chairman and Leader of the House posts, there are at least three names doing the rounds for the Mayoral post, which has been reserved for women.

The party is expected to take a final decision on the three posts by Wednesday, party sources said. Sources said the party has almost zeroed in on Vijender Gupta for the Standing Committee Chairmanship while Subhash Arya is the front-runner for the post of Leader of the House.

Considering their experience in the House, Gupta and Arya

are almost certain to make to the posts, they said.

While Gupta, who won the elections with the highest margin in the April 5 polls, was a Standing Committee member in the previous House, Arya was the Leader of Opposition. The names that came for the Mayorship include three-time councillor Arti Mehra and Rajni Abbi, a law professor.

The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be elected on April 20 during its first meeting after the elections in which BJP captured power from Congress.

The new members will also take oath on the same day. BJP has 164 seats in the 272-member House.
