Activists of BJP youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, on Monday clashed with police during their protest against poor law and order situation in the state in front of Assembly while it was in session, forcing the cops to lathicharge and use tear gas shells.
Several people, including policemen, got injured during brick batting between BJYM activists and police, and vehicle of a news channel was damaged, police said.
The lathicharge on BJYM workers evoked strong protest by BJP MLAs in Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha forcing its adjournment for the day.
"In support of their 11-point charter of demands and to protest against "poor" law and order, increasing crime against women, power cuts, problems of youths and students, the BJYM workers attempted to gherao the state Assembly this afternoon," BJP media incharge Manish Shukla said.
Inspector General of Police (law and order) Amrendra Sengar said that during protest the agitating BJYM workers tried to forcibly enter the Vidhan Bhawan premises.
Police attempted to prevent them from entering Vidhan Bhawan premises by putting up barricaded, but the activists refused to relent and indulged into brickbat, he said, adding to bring the situation under control, police resorted to lathicharge, used water cannon and fired tear gas shells.
He said that there were reports of several people, including policemen, getting injured during brick batting and vehicle of a news channel was damaged.
Shukla also claimed that nearly 50 BJYM activists were injured in the incident.
