They’ve already completed two successful international tours. First Australia, last November and then Dubai, earlier this year where they played at the Global Metal Bash Festival. For Blind Image, one of the city’s oldest metal outfits, slowing the pace doesn’t seem to be an option.
The band is gearing up to embark on a South East Asian tour next month — this time hoping to reach a completely different market, although closer home. Titled Prologue, the first part of the tour will kickstart from Bangkok on October 31, playing across Penang, Johor Bahuru and Kuala Lumpur. Says founding member Srikrishna Natesan (drums), “Actually if we weren’t running short of time on our third album, there would have been more shows in the Phillipines and Indonesia.” Also doubling up as the group’s manager, there’s a lot of planning beyond the tour setlist that keeps him busy. He adds with a sigh, “Getting visas for five guys in three different countries — it’s crazy!’
The rest of the Blind Image line-up includes Noble Luke (vocal duties), Siva (bassist), Sricharan (lead guitarist) and their newest member, Rama (guitars). The latter, who recently graduated from the Los Angeles Music Academy, had his last metal stint close to eight years ago. So he reveals, “I was surprised when I got the call from Krishna.” Interestingly enough, he was told that they weren’t looking for a guitarist with metal experience. So it isn’t surprising, when Rama adds, “This is why much of my contribution to the third album is jazz influenced, but with a metal format.” However, headbangers, don’t let this get you thinking that the music has turned ‘soft’.
After their albums, Psychobabble (2008) and More Than Human (2009), this upcoming release promises to be their heaviest yet. “It’s going to be like More Than Human, except on steroids,” Krishna says with a laugh. The album is yet to be titled and the band is reluctant to give away too many details at this point, but they do let out one teaser. “It’s highly political, lyrically,” states Krishna. Metal with a message, perhaps? Fans will find out soon enough when the album releases next January.
Right now of course, the focus is on their South East Asian tour — hordes of screaming (possibly growling) fans, airplane hopping and jet lag. Asked about their thoughts on the tour and Krishna jokes from previous experience, “I just hope we find some vegetarian food.” Although this time around, he resolves to be prepared. “No worries, if I can’t find anything,” he says. “I’m going to be carrying cup noodles and MTR masala mix just in case!”
