KOCHI: In a creative intervention to ensure better roads in the city, the Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the Kochi Corporation to complete the repair and maintenance of roads by December 31. The High Court directive has come as a respite for the corporation which has been under severe criticism from various corners for the pathetic state of roads. The High Court extended the deadline for completing the repair and maintenance work undertaken by the corporation after considering a request from the latter seeking more time. Issuing the order, Justice Harun-Ul-Rashid directed the corporation to submit a detailed progress report on the repair and maintenance of roads by December 15. The report should mention the work done till date and the progress. The court posted the hearing of the case to December 15. On September 1, the court had issued an order directing the corporation to complete the repair of damaged roads undertaken by it within a period of three weeks. The order was issued considering a petition from C P Ajith Kumar of Kochi seeking a directive from the court to complete the road work.On October 18, the corporation secretary submitted a request before the HC seeking more time for completion of the repair work. The details of the work done till date and the progress of the work were also mentioned along with the request. The corporation pointed out that the repair of roads is something beyond its control. The continuous rain, the contractors’ protest owing to default on payments and lack of funds were pointed as some of the reasons for the delay in completion of the repair work. The corporation requested to give four month’s time for completion of maintenance work. The corporation further said that steps are being taken to complete the work within the period. It was based on this request that the High Court extended the deadline on Wednesday.
