CHENNAI: The office of the State Election Commissioner (SEC) should be brought under the purview of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to facilitate free and fair polls, State Secretary of CPM G Ramakrishnan said here on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters after releasing his party’s civic poll manifesto, Ramakrishnan said the SEC should be independent and impartial. “The SEC is dependent on the State government as his post has to be extended by it every two years. Hence, the office of the SEC should be brought under the ambit of the Union government,” he said. The ECI appoints the Chief Electoral Officer of the State. Similarly, the State poll chief should also be appointed by the ECI. “This could be done in the manner in which the CEC is selected. The State should send three IAS official’s names and the ECI would select one of them.”Ramakrishnan announced that the CPM would extend support to the CPI in places where the DMDK and the Marxist party were not contesting.
