Maharashtra: Two people were killed and several others were feared to be trapped under the debris after a multi-storey building collapsed on Sunday morning in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra.
Bhiwandi is nearly 20 km from north-east of Mumbai and a massive rescue operation is underway. This is second incident of building collapse in the town in one week.
Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief of the Thane Municipal Corporation, Santosh Kadam told PTI that the building located at Hanuman Tekadi locality on the Kalyan road collapsed and seven-eight persons are feared trapped.
"Exact number of families residing in the building are yet to be ascertained," he added.
Soon after the incident officers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Civil Defence, Home Guards and Fire Cell rushed to the spot to rescue those who are trapped.
Police sources said, the building collapsed around 6.45 am due to heavy rainfall for the last few days in the area.
According to Bhiwandi tehsildar, Vaishali Lambate fire brigade personnel have rescued four persons from the debris.
She said the building fell under "dangerous building" category and it was a "very old" ground plus two-floor structure.
Occupants of the building were also served evacuation notices by the civic body, the official added.
Meanwhile, 20 people were rescued including six children.
On July 31, a two-storey residential building had crashed amid heavy rains claiming nine lives, including that of four children and three women, while 10 others were injured.
