BHUBANESWAR: On Friday when Sara, a six year old tigress of Nandankanan Zoo, gave birth to three cubs, it may well have become the first feline to have delivered babies under CCTV eyes in India.  The Zoo which has been in news for all wrong reasons in the recent past had reasons to cheer with the fresh births. In November, six cubs had died within 48 hours of their birth, only to be followed by inquiry teams from the State as well as the Central Zoo Authority (CZA).  It was a CZA inquiry team which had recommended that CCTVs be installed to monitor birth of large cats as well as their health in the infancy. Soon after, the Zoo installed two CCTVs in the feeding chamber of Sara and another two in the back crawl.  “We have been monitoring her since December 25. Although tigers deliver during early mornings, Sara gave birth to the first cub at about 8.52 am and the others of the litter followed till 10.05 am,” Zoo Director, Dr Sudarshan Panda said.  From the monitoring room, Sara’s behaviour was been kept tab of which the Zoo officials say is normal. Of the three cubs, one appears weak. Soon after the birth, the Zoo convened the meeting of the technical committee on health of the inmates to chalk out the future course of action. The Nandankanan Zoo officials have also invited an expert, Naveen Kumar from Hyderabad, to advise them on the matter.  Sara was brought from the wild in Madhya Pradesh to Nandankanan in an exchange programme in 2009. It was paired with Rishi, a Zoo-born normal tiger.
