Gadkari had on Sunday said all efforts were being made to bring down the number of fatalities in road accidents across the country by 50%.
Explaining about the measures, Gadkari had said the government wanted to improve the conditions of roads including repairs, and enhance visibility to minimise road curves to save lives. He said about 3 lakh people suffer from multiple fractures resulting in loss of hands or limbs.
"India is one of the countries having a large number of accidents and fatalities. To overcome this, the ministry has identified over 2500 accident spot on the national highways," he added.
While announcing the Empowered Group to advise on road policy issues, Gadkari had said 720 black spots have been identified on National Highways across the country and Rs 11,000 crore have been earmarked to take remedial steps in this regard.
He said that presently about 5 lakh accidents take place in the country in which about 1.5 lakh people die every year. The target is to reduce accidents by 50% in the next five years.
