Three schoolteachers were arrested on Saturday for allegedly caning a Class IX student, telling him to drink urine rather than chew tobacco and denying permission to go to the washroom at a Government aided higher secondary school hostel in Mangalamedu in Perambalur district on Thursday.
When the 14-year-old boy could not hold himself and passed urine inside the study hall of the school hostel, the teachers were enraged, used abusive language and thrashed him with a cane on his shoulders.
Although initial reports suggested that he was made to drink his urine, his complaint with the police, lodged on Saturday, did not contain any such allegations. Chief Education Officer K Mallika, who conducted initial inquiries, said she did not find anything to show that the boy was made to drink urine.
After the ordeal, the boy from of Patteeswaram in Thanjavur district ran away from the hostel of Little Flower Higher Secondary School in the early hours of Friday and reached home.
When he informed his father that the teachers had beaten him up and alleged that he was forced to drink his urine, his dad took him to the Kumbakonam government hospital for check up and treatment.
On Saturday, his father Thesingu Rajan lodged a complaint with the Mangalamedu police station, based on which the teachers Raja, Karuppaiah and Sakthivel were arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 294 (B) (using abusive words) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon).
