Mumbai: Mumbai Police on Tuesday claimed a significant breakthrough after they arrested a Chhota Rajan gang member from outside the high-security Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai
Police arrested one Ganesh Bhikaji Sawant from outside the jail premises and recovered one revolver and three rounds of ammo.
Sawant was purportedly trying to leak in some information to Rajan's key lieutenant D K Rao who is currently lodged inside the jail.
"Acting on a specific tip off, Unit III of the crime branch arrested Ganesh Bhikaji Sawant from outside the Arthur Road Jail at 1330 hours yesterday," Deputy Commissioner of Police (detection) Dhananjay Kamlakar was quoted by agencies as saying.
According to Kamlakar, police are investigating if Sawant had indeed come to meet Rao, but refused to comment on whether Rao's nefarious activities were continuing unabated from inside the jail.
Sawant is reportedly a close associate of another Rajan gang member Satish Kalya. He has four offences registered against him, including an attempt to murder and has now been booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act.
He was also and rmanded to police custody till March 20 by a local court.
There have been numerous instances in the past to raise police's suspicions that Rao is running his "business" from inside the jail premises.
In fact, police also intercepted telephonic conversations between Rao and others.
